Cathy Horyn's Fun Mini-Profile Of RuPaul And Her Drag Race

A few of my favorite paragraphs, if you don't mind:

"Years ago, according to his Web site bio, when he was delivering cars around the country for his brother-in-law’s Atlanta dealership, he loved nothing better than to drive along a highway at night, light up a joint and blast Donna Summer’s “Live and More.” Though the wiring is tighter, the self-reliant capacity for joy is still evident in his manner."

"Our food arrived and Mr. Charles, picking up his knife and fork, continued: “It’s not all good news. They don’t have a sense of history. I’ll say to one of them, ‘Oh, you look like Myrna Loy’ ” — he let out a long laugh — “or the Pointer Sisters. And they don’t even know who the Pointer Sisters are. They think that Lady Gaga originated a style. Oh, look how beautiful that toast is!”"

RE: This year's winner, Raja: "“First of all, if you can make it through the challenges, then you’re the last man standing,” Mr. Charles explained. “Also, she consistently had a Google Earth view of the world — it wasn’t just regional drag. She has a background in fashion and illustration. We had an ‘I Love America’ challenge and she came out in a Native American outfit — brilliant. The other girls did the obvious.”"
